a bittersweet goodbye...

Last night our Birmingham Auburn crew bid the Beasley's farewell before they begin their adventure overseas in Hong Kong. We are so excited for the opportunity they have been presented with, and are so thankful we were all able to get together to say goodbye!
Farewell Beasley's! We love you and will miss you!

A night on call...

Part of a "complete history & physical" of a patient includes the "HPI", or "history of present illness". It is the part of the patient's story that expounds on the "chief complaint", and describes the events that brought the patient to the hospital/doctor's office. The following is an HPI I wrote after seeing a patient on my most recent night on call (Xs used so I don't violate HIPPA privacy rights).

"Mr. X is a 28 year old African-American male with a past psychiatric history of paranoid schizophrenia who was brought to the X Emergency Department by the X Police Department after assaulting a police officer. The patient's neighbors called the police after they noticed Mr. X acting strangely outside of his house and an array of knives wildly strewn about his back deck. Mr. X states that he is on a mission from the CIA to take down the police force of America because they are abusing their power. Mr. X assaulted two police officers, and a taser was used to subdue him. When asked how long the patient has worked for the CIA, he reports "since the year of ham and cheese." When asked to clarify how long that was he replied, "you know, ham and cheese." Patient states he also works for the Japanese government on a mission as a "body snatcher". He reports being employed as an entertainer and being involved in diamond smuggling. When the nursing staff attempted to give him a tetanus shot he refused, saying "I'm a doctor and I am smarter than all the rest of you." During the course of the interview the patient was in four-point restraints. When asked if he has been taking his psychiatric medicines he reports, "I already finished all those." He reports hearing a male voice that gives him his CIA mission commands. Pt denies visual hallucinations. He reports decreased sleep and appetite over the past week. Upon release from the hospital the patient is to report directly to jail to where he will be held on two charges of felony assault against a police officer."

And my favorite chief complaint from that same call night (and keep in mind, these are patients who report to the Emergency Room): "I need to see a podiatrist. My toenails are so long and I don't have anything to cut them with."

Life in medicine in never boring.

The 4th...

Over the weekend of the 4th we made trip to Auburn for the wedding of my college roommate and close friend Margaret. She was just as classy and beautiful of a bride as I always imagined she would be!
We enjoyed some quality time with one of our favorite couples...
Walker + Anderson's + cheese dip + margaritas + Laredo's palomino burrito makes me one happy girl!

Sunday morning we headed up to Lake Martin to meet Jennifer & Pat and had a wonderful time.  We enjoyed lake activities reminiscent of our younger years, which Walker & I both paid for dearly in muscle aches when we woke up on Monday morning.
At this point you may be thinking, "Oh sad, everyone knows how to wakeboard but Emily. All she got was a thumbs up picture." While admittedly the worst of the four of us, I actually did make it up for a good 15-20 seconds or so (the picture of proof just turned out a little fuzzy).
I only wish I had my camera when these two pups hit up the beach for some sand and swimming. Maybe I'll get to document that one some other time. Let's just say Bella made dramatic improvements in her swimming and retrieving abilities and Walker & I were quite proud.

Meet Laney...

Her mom is my SIL, my maid of honor, and one of my best friends. We've only been official family for 2 years but our history goes back so much further than that...
Fast forward 9 years, and she is now the new mom of beautiful little Laney Kathryn!
Laney couldn't have asked for better parents than her and Eric, and Walker and I are so excited to have another niece in the family! We spent the whole weekend with this sweet little girl nestled in our arms, on our chests, or on our laps.
Her Zoolander face...
And finally, her way of letting me know I had taken entirely too many pictures of her :)
Congratulations Lele & Eric!!

Oh, babies!

I love newborns and children in general. Thankfully, my super-fertile friends and family members have kept the little ones coming!

Last Thursday I flew out to Houston to meet Claire and Reid's new baby, Charlotte. Claire is one of my best friends and roommates from Auburn, and watching her become such a fantastic mom has been a joy to witness. I spent at least 2 hours each day with beautiful little Charlotte asleep on my chest, and 2-year old Lucy kept me fully entertained and laughing all weekend. I miss them already!

As I was preparing to leave on Sunday, I got the phone call that my SIL Lele was in labor! Sweet Laney Kathryn made her debut early Monday morning, weighing in at 6 lbs 15 oz.
Some additional great photos can be found on their friend Emily's blog. Tons more pictures to come after this weekend!!

Memorial Day

Last weekend Walker and I loaded up the car to head back down to the beach for the holiday weekend, adding Lizzie and two of our precious nieces along the way! The house we stayed at is on the Gulf behind a barrier island, so the water and beach are more like a bay. Bella LOVES it there (see last year's post), especially when the tide is out, which is how we found it when we arrived. Notice our little athlete's mid-sprint stance...
We again enjoyed a weekend beautiful weather - a perfect mix of sun and clouds with a slight breeze as we lounged on the more traditional beach at St. George Island.

We played contently,
enjoyed the water,
napped,
played in the sand,
and enjoyed watching all the seagulls.
Our lab-trapped-in-a-shih-tzu-body loved her time in the sand and surf as well...
So hard to leave the peacefulness of this place and go back to the real world...
Hope your holiday weekend was equally as relaxing and enjoyable!
